Frequently asked questions
That's a great question. We're not the best fit for everyone, and that's ok. One of the many reasons Dayton is such a wonderful place to live is because there are so many fantastic arts education opportunities here! If you're looking for holistic music education and performance training in a compassionate, joyful, highly-focused environment (yes, those three things can coexist), this is the place. This isn't just about learning songs for a recital. This is about training both musicianship skills and life skills through lessons, workshops, community events, and large-scale performances. Everything we do centers around building both competence and character because who we are is how we perform.
A typical membership model looks like... --a semi-weekly lesson (14 buffer weeks built into each lesson package to account for travel, illness, rehearsals, etc.) --a monthly group workshop OR formal recital --regular workshops, masterclasses, parties, and other community-building events --your own practice/study time in between lessons because you get out of training what you invest in it Lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes based on age, instrument, experience, and goals. We think of it like a gym membership. Your membership provides access to the weight machines, the spin classes, the treadmills, and the sauna. And if you want to do it all, you can. And if you want to just choose the features that best suit your goals, that's fine too.
Nope! Our whole model is predicated on the belief that lessons are just one aspect of a musician's education, and we are committed to providing truly holistic arts education through: 1. Lessons 2. Performers' Workshops+Community Learning 3. Masterclasses+Mentorship 4. Recitals+Performances Occasionally, we are able to provide per-lesson services in specific instances to adult musicians. Send us a message with info about what you're looking to accomplish through lessons, and we'll do our best to accommodate.
Lessons are reserved for students on a year-long basis. Due to high demand and limited teacher and space availability, we typically are not able to offer long-term schedule changes. In the event of a short-term conflict, we recommend rescheduling week-by-week through the "reschedule" button in your lesson reminder email.
Absolutely. Music is for everyone. However, we are NOT specialists in this regard. We are specialists in our various instruments. So we rely heavily on parents/caregivers to help us understand how to best support our diverse learners. Every student is different, and we teach to the individual in front of us. Please communicate with us on what your child needs and how we can best partner with your family in their musical journey.
Specific practice expectations are up to each teacher, but our general recommendation is...please practice. Going a week in between lessons without looking at your music results in: 1. slow progress 2. frustration (for student, parents, and teacher) 3. overall poor experience It's fun to be good at something. The only way to get good at something is to do it over and over. As far as materials: 1. instrument 2. method books/technique books/anthologies 3. notebook/binder for lesson notes, scales, exercises It is crucial to bring these materials to lessons. Coming to your lesson without your books is no different than going to dance class or soccer practice without the right shoes!
